Obituary for Alfonzo Ernest "Al" Custis Sr,

Alfonzo Ernest Custis, Sr., affectionately known as "Big Al," was the beloved son of the late Charlie and Eunice Strand Custis and the beloved husband of Kathy P. Custis. He was born on January 10, 1956 in Melfa, Virginia. Alfonzo slipped peacefully into eternal peace on Monday, January 30, 2023 at his residence in Melfa, Virginia.

Alfonzo was educated in the public schools of Accomack County and graduated from Onancock High School in June 1974. He also received his Safe Water Technician License from Virginia Tech University in May 1986.

Alfonzo confessed his life to Christ at an early age when he joined St. Mark Baptist in Melfa, Virginia. Later he joined Snead Memorial United Methodist Church, where he served on the Usher Board and loved singing in the choir. Alfonzo also was a member of Ebenezer Baptist Church for a period of his life. He was a faithful member until his health began to fail.

Alfonzo was united in holy matrimony to Kathy Parker for thirty-eight years and dated her for two years. From that union they had three children. Prior to his union with Kathy, he had two children.

Alfonzo was employed for several years at both Perdue Farms and Holly Farms (now Tyson Foods). He was also employed by Rent-A-Center for a number of years, in which he enjoyed helping people. Alfonzo was definitely a people's person! He loved his family and life. And "Big Al" was a heck of a ball player. He played softball a good part of his adult life. He was a force to be reckoned with on and off the softball field. Al was loved by all that met him, and was known as a fun loving person with a heart as BIG as Texas! He loved working in his yard and in his words, "I got to keep my yard tight." Alfonzo was known for his wardrobe; his suits, ties, shirts, shoes, and grooming of his face had to be top notch when he stepped out at church or for a formal event. Alfonzo loved going to churches, listening to gospel music, and preaching. He loved the Lord.

Alfonzo was preceded in death by his oldest brother, Robert Custis. He leaves to cherish his fond memories: wife, Kathy; four sons, Shawn, Christopher, Alfonzo "AJ" Jr., and Broderick; one daughter, Latanya (Christopher) Williams; eight grandchildren; one goddaughter, Jessica Handy; two brothers, Norman (Sue) Custis and Ronnie (Lorraine) Custis; one sister, Barbara Ann (Sam) Gaskin; four sisters-in- law, Viola Custis, Sheron Parker-Payne, Matilda Parker-Wade, and Janis Harmon; two brothers-in-law, Kerby Parker and Eric Parker; two special moms whom he adopted, Ms. Rose Tyler and Ms. Sarah Watson; and a host of family and friends.

Lovingly and sorrowfully submitted,
The Family
