Obituary for Avery Lydell Gray
Born in Manhattan, New York on July 23, 1958, Avery Lydell Gray was the son of the late Maretha Gray and June Allen. He was predeceased by his mother and was reared from an early age by his grandmother, Daisy Bell Harris. Avery departed this life suddenly at the age of 62, on December 11, 2020.
Avery was educated in the Accomack County Public Schools and graduated from Central High School in June 1976. After graduation, he enlisted in the United States Army. Following his tenure in the United States Army, he was employed as a Maintenance Technician at Accomack County School Board, where he worked for ten years. In 1987, he left the Eastern Shore of Virginia and relocated to Northern Virginia, where he was employed as a Maintenance Technician at Flow General Incorporated. Avery pursued another employment opportunity as a Maintenance Supervisor at Goodwin House. Most recently, he was a HVAC Engineer at Greenspring in Springfield, Virginia until he retired earlier this year in June.
In 1990, Avery was united in holy matrimony to the former June “Margaret” Floyd, his hometown sweetheart. From this union two beloved sons were born, Marcus and Desmond. Avery began attending Mount Pleasant Baptist Church of Alexandria, Virginia in 1990. He later joined and was baptized in 1994. He was a faithful member and sang in the Men’s Choir. Avery was an avid Washington Football fan and he enjoyed spending time with his family. He had a quiet demeanor and a good sense of humor. He was a wonderful and loving husband to Margaret and a devoted father and grandfather.
Avery leaves to cherish his memories a devoted wife, June “Margaret” of thirty years, his sons, Marcus Gray (Carolina) of Manassas, VA and Desmond Gray of Triangle, VA, three grandchildren, Eva, Solomon, and Miguel, his mother-in-law, Bernice V. Floyd of Melfa, VA, his sister, Jennifer Gray of Melfa, VA and one nephew, Vern Hyslop of Baltimore MD, his aunt, Barbara Starchia of Washington, DC, and uncle, Jim Gray (Lois) of Melfa, VA and a host of relatives and friends. He was a gentle soul and never complained. Avery will be deeply missed by all who knew him.
