Obituary for Booker Telafair "Book" Stevens

“God sees when the footsteps falter
And the pathway has grown too steep
Then He touches the weary eyelids,
And gives His dear ones sleep.”

In the early morning hours on Wednesday, December 1, 2021, God in His infinite wisdom, sent His angel to Virginia Beach, Virginia, to take His loved one home. Booker T. Stevens, affectionately known as “Book,” quietly slipped away to eternal rest surrounded by his family.

Booker was born in Cheriton, Virginia, on February 16, 1929 to the late Jack Stevens and Sylvia Bailey Stevens. He was the younger of two sons from this blessed union.

Booker was educated in the Northampton County Public School system. In Snowhill, Maryland, 56 years ago, Booker married the love of his life, Bernice Bailey Stevens whom he affectionately referred to as “Pumpkin.” They made their home in Painter, Virginia, and were the proud parents of eight children. They could always be found in the company of each other when they were away from home. Booker was a family man who delighted in having his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren around him. He enjoyed cooking his “special meal” which always started with fried chicken, and it ended up as a delicious treat. He spent many evenings watching television with his precious “Pumpkin” by his side.

Booker was employed in several different capacities during his lifetime, which included custodial and janitorial services and with Perdue Foods in Accomac. He was a dependable and dedicated employee.

Booker will be remembered for his kindness, his courage, never complaining, and always saying thanks for whatever anyone would do for him or give to him. We shall miss “Book” deeply, but we know that he is now resting with his beloved ”Pumpkin” in the arms of the Master Creator.

In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his brother, Vernon Stevens.

Left to cherish Booker’s precious memory are his children, Yvonne Gaynor of Hampton, VA, Warren Bailey of Laplata, MD, Esco (Onita) Parker of Baltimore, MD, Reginald (Dinnah) Bailey of Roanoke Rapids, NC, Margo Stevens of Virginia Beach, VA, April (James) Bibbins of Portsmouth, VA, and Gary (Michelle) Stevens of Norfolk, VA. He also leaves a legacy of love to his thirteen grandchildren, a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, along with close friends.

Lovingly submitted,
The Family
