Obituary for Charles William "Big Dave" Godwin Jr.

On Monday, February 8, 2021, our family circle was broken when God called one of his own, Charles William Godwin, Jr., home to be with him. He was born on June 6, 1931 to the late Charles Lee Godwin, Sr. and Ida Francis Godwin in Messongo, Virginia.

“Big Dave,” as he was called by family and friends, was educated in the public schools of Accomack County. At an early age, he left school to seek employment to provide for his family. He later joined the United States Army. “Big Dave” proudly served his country. He was a member of Mount Olive Baptist Church in Jenkins Bridge, Virginia.

“Big Dave” was a dedicated truck driver for Evans Seafood for many years. He also shucked oysters at various places in Saxis, Chincoteague, and Crisfield.

“Dave” enjoyed nothing more than spending the day watching baseball and football on Sundays. His favorite teams were the Baltimore Orioles and the Washington Redskins. He also took enjoyment in playing numbers, playing cards, and completing crossword puzzles.

In addition to his parents, “Dave” was preceded in death by his wife of forty years, Joan Francis Parker Godwin; one brother, Arris June Godwin; three sisters, Polly Godwin, Ruth Bailey, and Lillis Hughes; and a special companion, Edith Watson.

“Dave” leaves to cherish his fond memories: his daughters, June ( Robert, Sr.) Gordy of Temperanceville, VA and Charlene Parker of Salisbury, MD; sons, Michael (Regina) Bowen of Jenkins Bridge, VA, Kevin Parker of Temperanceville, VA, and Darren (April) Parker of Salisbury, MD; five grandchildren, Robert (Amanda) Gordy, Jr. of Dover, DE, Ronnie (Kelly) Parker of Baltimore, MD, Bryant (Whitney) Gordy of Chesapeake, VA, Arianna Parker of Salisbury, MD, and Maya Siggers of Salisbury, MD; seven great-grandchildren, Kristian, Raven, Raquel, Bryson, Justice, Anaya, and Serenity; three nephews, David Bowser, Rick Bailey, and Thomas Hughes; five nieces, Pamela Milbourne, Carmela Milbourne, Janelle Hughes-Bowmer, Patricia Bailey-Martin, and Stephanie Jordan; and a host of great-nephews, great-nieces, other relatives, and friends.
