Obituary for Edna Virginia "Sarge" Waters

EDNA VIRGINIA WATERS, born on June 26, 1930, on Puncheon Landing Road in Pocomoke City, Maryland. She was the oldest daughter of the late Harvey Elwood Waters, Sr. and Elsie Viola Purnell Waters. She peacefully slipped from this life to her eternal rest on Tuesday, November 16, 2021 at her home in New Church, Virginia with her family by her side.

In 1947, she graduated from Worcester High School in Snow Hill, Maryland, after years of walking 2 miles to catch the bus. While working full time, she obtained her diploma from Clark Beauty School of Beauty Secrets in Accomac, Virginia and hairdresser license from the state of Virginia in October 1962.

On May 30, 1953, Edna married the late Clarence Edward Waters, Sr. and became a Virginia resident. Together, they raised four children and shared raising five grandchildren, a niece, and a nephew. Edna also shared raising a great-grandchild and along the way gained the honor of being called Mom by many nonbiological children through her family connections and work experiences.

She was always a dedicated and hardworking employee and began working at the Pocomoke City Laundry Factory at an early age. She later moved to Dulaney Foods, then to Birds Eye, and finally Holly Farms. While working fulltime at Holly Farms, she cared for her mother and father and later retired to care for her baby sister who became ill and then her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Edna began her Christian walk at a very young age in the Pocomoke City area. Upon moving to Virginia, she became a member of St. Mark United Methodist Church, where she served as treasurer, sang on the senior choir, and worked with the United Methodist Women. In 2017, St. Mark was included in a merger and New Beginnings United Methodist Church became her home church until her death.

Edna was affectionately referred to as “Mom,” “Grandmom,” and “Granny,” she earned the name of “Sarge” being the matriarch of the family and always tried to keep family in line. Her “Jodie” became well known. Family gatherings with plenty of food was her passion and even when you would not do right she wanted you in her sight, so she could watch you and be sure that you were safe.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Harvey, Sr. and Elsie Waters; husband, Clarence E Waters, Sr., brothers, Theodore, Sylvester, and Thomas Waters; sisters, Regina Dickerson and Betty Ann Taylor; and brothers-in-law, sisters-in-law, nieces and nephews.

She leaves to cherish her memories four children, Anthony Nathaniel Waters, Sr. (Regina) of Horntown VA, Peggy Ann Wilson of Temperanceville, VA, Clarence Edward Waters, Jr. of New Church, VA, and Kenneth Wayne Waters (Queen) of Fredericksburg, VA; grandchildren, Anthony Nathaniel Waters, Jr. of Horntown VA, Corey Lamar Waters of Clinton, MD, John Wayne Wilson, II of Atlanta, GA, Starmayne Annette Wilson of Virginia Beach, VA, and Jason DeRay Waters of New Castle, DE; great-grandchildren, DaShawn Malik Wilson of Virginia Beach, VA and Judah Andrew Wilson of Atlanta, GA.; siblings, Harvey Elwood Waters, Jr. of New Castle, DE, Gladys McNeil of Riegelwood, NC, and Franklin Waters, Sr. of Pocomoke City, MD; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.

Lovingly and sorrowfully submitted,
The Family
