Obituary for Edward Lee "James Brown/Flywright" Harmon

The Lord is my shepherd I shall not want. ~Psalm 23:1

Edward Lee Harmon was born in Accomack County, Virginia on June 29, 1945 to the late Clarence Harmon and Viola Bunting.

Edward Lee was a life long resident of Accomack County and received his education in its public school system. After leaving school, he worked in various industries, until he gained employment with the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT). He retired from VDOT after thirty years of service.

On December 8, 1965, Edward Lee married the love of his life, Janette Northan. This union was blessed with two children, Tonya Harmon Alexander and Eric Antonio Harmon, who preceded him in death.

Edward Lee was a member of Metompkin Baptist Church in Parksley, Virginia. He joined this congregation under the leadership of Rev. Leroy Mapp.

Edward Lee was affectionately known as “Fly Wright,” “James Brown,” and “Godfather,” by his friends. His grandchildren lovingly called him “Grandpop.” He was a fun-loving and jovial person. He always had a smile and a joke for everyone he met; no one was a stranger.

On May 3, 2021, Edward Lee departed this life at Wayne UNC Health Care in Goldsboro, North Carolina. In addition to his parents and son, he was preceded in death by a brother, William J. Matthews.

Edward Lee is survived by his loving wife, Janette Harmon of Onancock, VA; daughter, Tonya Alexander of Goldsboro, NC; four grandchildren, Dontrel George, Brandon George, Erykah Harmon, and Lanazja Alexander; seven great-grandchildren; sister, Shirley Bunting of FL; two special cousins, Juanita Warner and Wayne Hall; special co-worker, Betty Reid; and a host of other relatives and friends.
