Obituary for Evelyn Louise Strand (Carter)

Evelyn Louise Carter Strand was born on February 22, 1926 to Ivory William Carter, Sr. and Beatrice Winchester Carter in Stow Creek, New Jersey. Evelyn was educated in Cumberland County, New Jersey Public Schools. She was full of life and laughter even at a young age. Evelyn fell in love with and married her soul mate, Louis Strand, on October 29, 1963. The couple shared thirty-one beautiful years together until Louis passed in March of 1995.

Through her years as a wife, mother, and grandmother, Evelyn was the life of the party and if there was not a party, she created one. Every day with her was full of laughter and joy. Evelyn taught her children and grandchildren the value of hard work, this included waking them up at 3:00 AM on any given day to work the fields hand in hand with “Momma.” These were the best of times despite the work because it was time well spent with “Momma.”

Evelyn later found her passion cleaning houses for families of the Eastern Shore. She was a worker, but she was also a devoted daughter, sister, wife, mother, grandmother, and friend. Fond memories of Evelyn dancing, laughing, joking around, and playing cards/with dolls will live on forever and ever. She had a way of making each and every one of her children and grandchildren feel special and loved because they were.

Evelyn was a member of the Mighty Voices of Gospel. She was also a member of New Mount Calvary Baptist Church, where she sang on the choir and attended regularly until her health began to fail. Her daughter was her constant companion and caregiver. When you saw one, you saw the other. The bond they shared was absolutely inseparable.

Evelyn passed away peacefully at her home in Daugherty, Virginia on Sunday, August 29, 2021. She was preceded in death by her parents, Ivory and Beatrice Carter Sr.; son, June William Carter; husband, Louis Strand; sisters, Beatrice, Francis, Hazel, Mary, and Octavia Carter; and brothers, Arthur, Ivory Jr., and Roland Carter.

Evelyn Louise Carter Strand’s memory will be forever cherished by her beloved daughter, Deloise (John) Hack of Daugherty, VA; sons, Jack (Diane) Strand of Keller, VA and Nathaniel (Deborah) Strand, Sr. of Richmond, VA; daughter-in-law, Gladys Strand of Painter, VA; sister, Wilhemina “Gertrude” Denby of Vineland, NJ; brothers, Robert Carter of Vineland, NJ and Sharpless Carter of Port Norris, NJ; eleven grandchildren; twenty-one great-grandchildren; twenty-one great, great-grandchildren; one great, great, great-grandchild; one dear friend, Margaret Brooks; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives, and friends.

Lovingly and sorrowfully submitted,
The Family
