Obituary for George Delma "Big Mi" Mizzelle

Children are a heritage from the Lord, offspring a reward from him
Psalm 127:3

George Delma Mizzelle, lovingly known as “Big Mi”, was the fifth born of the late Percy and Emma Mizzelle in Columbia, North Carolina on January 29, 1944. He fell asleep in death on Saturday, January 7, 2023 at 2:29 PM at Riverside Rehabilitation Center.

George was a member of the class of 1963 from Walker High School in Edenton, North Carolina, where he was reared by his loving and Godly parents. In the same year of graduation, he entered Elizabeth City State University and became a member of the “Mighty Vikings” football team. He enjoyed college life and graduated in 1968 with a Bachelor’s Degree in Industrial Arts Education.

After graduation, George married his college sweetheart, Eula White Mizzelle. This union was blessed with two children to love and nurture as gifts from God, Gregory and Gwame. Their happy circle was broken first when their youngest son preceded them in death in 2019. In addition to his parents and son, his two brothers, Thay and James Mizzelle; and three sisters, Lillian Satterfield, Florence Kellogg, and Linda Mizzelle, preceded George in death.

George always had a passion for laughter and joking. He would have the “Last Word” regardless of how long it took. He relocated to Accomack County in 1968 and began his beloved career in education, and taught at several schools including, North Accomack Elementary School, Mary N. Smith Middle School, Onancock Learning Center, Central Middle School, and Arcadia High School. He mentored and coached many school and community youths.

George loved God, his church, family, friends, students, and coworkers. As a husband, father, grandfather, brother, mentor, teacher, fraternity brother, coach, umpire and referee, he touched the lives of many. He always gave his best to any cause to always help promote love and joy. George enjoyed meeting new people; he never met a stranger. He also looked forward to attending the CIAA tournaments annually where he joined both friends and rivals in testy conversations. George retired after teaching for thirty years and driving the school bus for over twenty years. He also worked part time for Accomack County Parks and Recreations for over twenty years.

Loved ones remaining to cherish his memory are his wife, Eula W. Mizzelle of Parksley, VA; son, Gregory D. (Andrea) Mizzelle of Pocomoke, MD; daughter-in-law, Tyronda Poulson Mizzelle of Accomac, VA; one brother, John (Tambara) Mizzelle of Georgetown, DE; two sisters, Angelico Powell and Martha Price, both of Bridgeton, NJ; three brothers-in-law, Felton White of Tarboro, NC, Harvey (Velma) White of Newark, DE, and Rev. Charles Crawford of Jamaica Queens, NY; two sisters-in-law, Denise (Nathaniel) Johnson of Tarboro, NC and Carolyn (Derek) Williams of Virginia Beach, VA; three grandsons, Gregory Mizzelle, Jr., Jha’tavius Poulson, and Jhamir Poulson; three granddaughters, Avon Renell Bell, Aigner Mizzelle, and Gabrianna Mizzelle; three great-grandchildren; one great, great-grandchild; and a host of other relatives and friends.

“Big Mi” will be fondly remembered for his swagger, his infamous Stacy Adams shoes, and most of all the love and fun shared with his family and friends and of course, the famous Sage breakfast buddies.

Lovingly submitted,
The Family
