Obituary for Geraldine Virginia "Gerry" Cox (Kellam)

Geraldine Virginia Cox, beloved mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister, relative, friend, and devoted Jehovah’s Witness, passed away peacefully on February 17, 2022, in Onancock, Virginia. She was born on May 21, 1941, in Cherrystone, Virginia to Richard and Helen Mae (Trusty) Kellam.

Geraldine received her education in Northampton County, Virginia. She married James Ernest Cox at the age of eighteen on July 13, 1959. Four children were born from this union. The family resided in Asbury Park, New Jersey for many years. On any given day, the couple could be found laughing, listening to music, dancing, gardening, and enjoying time with family. They were married for fifty-five joyous years before she was widowed.

At an early age, Geraldine showed a passion for playing basketball and singing. As an adult, her hobbies and activities included sewing, crocheting, reading, jumping double dutch, and solving crossword puzzles. She was baptized as a Jehovah Witness in 1969. She worked as a housekeeper before switching careers. She retired after nineteen years of service as a Home Health Aide with the Visiting Nurses Association of Central Jersey, formerly MCOSS. She remained an active Witness in the Accomack Congregation until her Alzheimer’s diagnosis.

Geraldine was preceded in death by her father, mother, husband, daughter, Cheryl Cox, and brother, Joseph Kellam (Margaret). She leaves to cherish her memories sons, James E Cox (Terry), Earnest Cox (Sonja), and Gerald Cox, Sr.; grandchildren, Kyle Cox, Jasmine Cox, Gerald Cox, Jr., Gerell Cox, and Nia’Skye Cox; great-grandchildren, Sage Cox and Cameron Padgett; beloved sister, Brenda Smith (Joseph); and a host of special family members and friends.

Geraldine’s smile could light up a room. She will be forever remembered for the unconditional love she showed her family and friends.
