Obituary for Goldie Constance "Puddin" Baines (Upshur)

For we know that if our earthly house of this tabernacle were dissolved, we have a building of God, an house not made with hands, eternal in the heavens. 2 Corinthian 5:1

Goldie Constance Upshur made her transition on Friday, September 2, 2022 at Riverside Shore Memorial Hospital, Onancock, Virginia, surrounded by family. She was born on March 3, 1945 to the late Hildred Upshur and Louise Johnson Upshur. Goldie was the fourth born of eleven children. She was preceded in death, in addition to her parents, by her brother, Hildred, and son-in-law, Curtis Ames.

Goldie, affectionately known as “Puddin,” received her primary and secondary education in the Northampton County Public Schools system on the Eastern Shore of Virginia. After graduation from Northampton County High School in 1963, she moved to Glen Cove, New York.

Goldie started her career by attending nursing school, getting her Certified Nursing Assistance (CNA) certificate. She worked at Montclair Nursing Home in Glen Cove, New York for a few years. Goldie later moved back to the Shore. She worked at Northampton-Accomack Memorial (NAM) Hospital, Heritage Hall Nursing Home (one of the first employees in the early 1980’s), and the Hermitage on the Eastern Shore in Onancock. With her CNA certificate, she also did private duty.

Goldie gave her life to Christ at an early age and joined Bethel Baptist Church in Franktown, Virginia. Much later in life, she moved her membership to Transformation Church of God in Christ (COGIC) in Melfa, Virginia. In 2016, she returned to Bethel Baptist Church.

Goldie was a servant of the Lord and she loved sharing her love for God with people. It was her heart’s desire to lead everyone to the gift of life through the Lord Jesus Christ. Her passion to see souls come to Christ never ceased. She was a good steward to the gift God gave her. Goldie influenced the lives of people, as she was a natural caregiver who helped take care of others, and had a passion for working with children. She helped raise family members and her affinity for children was so great that her reputation and passion were exceedingly blessed through them. She was known as “Mama Goldie.” She was gentle but firm, compassionate but loving, and if you were a friend of the family, you were considered a friend of hers. Do not let her works be in vain. The family of Goldie is encouraged to celebrate and protect the harvest of her labor, and encourage you to let her legacy continue to live on.

She sang in the choir (one of the first of the WFT Gospel Choirs at Bethel). Goldie was a Sunday school teacher, a Missionary, leader in noon day prayer (oh could she pray!), a Bible study member from her home and over the phone in her later years. She was also a member of the Pastoral Aide Committee and Nursing Ministry. Goldie loved to read her Bible, cook (to have some of her macaroni & cheese and rolls was the highlight of a perfect dinner), and spend time with the family. She joined the Eastern Star and served as Worthy Matron for many years while soliciting many members. When she retired from the hospital, she became a babysitter for many, many children of all ages.

Her favorite past time was playing softball, (which she was a stern player and would slide into 1st, 2nd, 3rd bases and home plate, when necessary or not. She just couldn’t run to the next base without sliding. She loved to play dominoes of all kinds and cook Sunday dinner on Saturdays. She didn’t believe doing work on the Lord’s day. She loved, loved, loved to watch the Roller Derby Sport on television.

Goldie leaves to cherish her loving memory her four children, Pamela Ames, Sylvia Moore (Ronald), Charles Thomas, and L’Tanya Johnson; sixteen grandchildren; thirty-two great-grandchildren; nine siblings, Shirley Ames, Gloria Harmon (William), Charles Upshur, Celestine Smith, Virginia Picou (David), Will Upshur (Wendy), Joyce Reid, Wendy M. Eutsler (Garland), and Mona L. Kelly (John); and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, family, friends, and those whose lives she touched in her journey of life.

Lovingly submitted,
The Family
