Irene Finney Major Douglas was born on December 26, 1944 to the late George Bell and Mary Finney. Her maternal grandparents, Arvil Byrd and Gracie Finney, raised her after the passing of her mother.

Red was educated in the Accomack County Public Schools. In 1964, she moved to Patterson, New Jersey and worked for Lighting Pac Company until she retired in 2009.

On September 14, 2009, she married her high school sweetheart, Roy Lee Douglas, Sr. They shared thirteen wonderful years of marriage until his passing on July 9, 2022.
