Obituary for Jacqueline "Mama Jack" Turner
Jacqueline Turner, affectionately known as “Mama Jack”, departed this life on December 16, 2020. She was born in Accomac, Virginia on May 20, 1935 to the late Johnny and Sarah Simpkins.
Jacqueline was educated in the Accomack County Schools. At the age of 18, she met and married Chester Lee Hopkins and from that union, Delores, was born. Soon after, she traveled to Philadelphia to work and live with her cousins Delores and Lorraine. Three years later, she relocated to Norfolk to work at her uncle’s record store. While in Norfolk, she met and married Richard Turner. From that union, Jeffrey and Dwayne were born. Although “Mama Jack” was bold, outspoken and feisty, she had a heart of gold and loved people. As the third eldest of fifteen children, she opened her home to several of her siblings and other relatives and friends.
Jacqueline supported and cared for her children and their families as a single parent. She was strong-willed, smart and generous. Through the years, “Mama Jack” was a blessing to many. She was a great cook and enjoyed feeding her family, friends, and neighbors. “Mama Jack” loved playing cards and attending Bingo games. She always had a witty saying and a sassy “comeback”. She journeyed through life with a carefree and easygoing attitude. In 2016, “Mama Jack” gave her life to Christ and joined First Gospel Tabernacle, where she loved to praise God with her voice and hands.
Jacqueline was preceded in death by her only and beloved daughter, Delores; four brothers, Robert, John, Joseph, and Hiram; and four sisters, Eva, Daisy, Geraldine, and Annette. She leaves to cherish her precious memories: two sons, Jeffrey (Wanda) and Dwayne (Angela) Turner; a son-in-law, Jobie (Regina) Boone; eleven grandchildren, Tracy (Chauncey), Latoya, Jobie (Tamara), Jeffrey, DonJuan (Samantha), Jacqueline (Javon), Kimberly (Alex), Christopher, Jennifer (Joshua), Jessica and Jasmine; nineteen great-grandchildren; two great, great-grandchildren; five sisters, Althea, Sarah, Florence, Teresa, and Linda; one brother, Moses; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives, and friends.
