Obituary for Josephine Smith Boldin

Josephine Smith Boldin was born on April 9, 1934 in Northampton County, Virginia. She was the seventh of eight children born to Harry and Idella Taylor Smith. Josephine peacefully departed this life and went to be with the Lord on February 25, 2022 at the Memorial Medical Center in Richmond, Virginia, surrounded by family and clergy.

Josephine was educated in the Northampton County Public Schools and enjoyed socializing and spending time with her sisters during her earlier years. As a young woman, Josephine married her former husband the late John Boldin, Sr. and made her home in Craddockville, Virginia. She was a devoted mother to her seven children. Josephine resided on the Eastern Shore of Virginia for over 40 years, where she attended church and worked part-time in the seafood, canning, and packaging industries to help support her family. Later, she moved to Richmond, Virginia, where she worked as a personal caregiver. She attended 5th Street Baptist and St. Paul’s Baptist Churches.

Josephine was a warm and loving daughter, sister, mother, and grandmother. She was a woman of faith. She loved children and laughter, and had a wonderful sense of humor, and often joked about herself. Josephine enjoyed the simple things in life including cooking, gardening, traveling, and seeing new things. She was an independent spirit and was self-reliant until her health began to fail.

Josephine leaves to cherish her memories four daughters, Rosie (James) Britt of Richmond, VA, Bathriene (Alphonso, Sr.) Johnson of Wardtown, VA, Pauline Boldin of Fort Washington, MD, and Loretta (Duane) Sutton of Fort Washington, MD; twelve grandchildren, Arnold Britt, Ronnie Collins, Alphonso Johnson, Jr., Candice and George Ferguson, Jr., LaMar Sutton, Jeffery and Brian Boldin, Keisha, Javon, Garnett Boldin, Jr., and Christopher Reynolds; two sisters, Corine Kellam of Exmore, VA and Helen Starchia of Dagsboro, DE; as well as a host of great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, other loved ones, and friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Harry and Idella Taylor Smith; three sons, Arnold, Garnett, Sr., and John Boldin, Jr.; and five siblings, Leon Smith, Sara Dyer, Lola Mae Holden, Estelle Ayers, and Dorothea Drummond.

Lovingly submitted,
The Family
