Obituary for Josephine Louise Byrd
2 Timothy 4:7-8
I have fought a good fight, I have finished my course, I have kept the faith:
Henceforth there is laid up for me a crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous judge shall give me at that day: and not to me only, but unto all them also that love his appearing.
Josephine L. Warrington Byrd, daughter of the late Finney Warrington and Helen Warrington Finney and the biological daughter of the late Malinda Williams, was born on April 1, 1941, in Eastville, Virginia. On May 2, 2021, God in His infinite wisdom called her home.
On October 26, 1962, Josephine married the love of her life, Lynwood T. Byrd. They were married for thirty years until his untimely death on June 18, 1992.
Josephine received her education in the public schools of Accomack County. Through the years, she was employed in various capacities including the R&G Shirt Factory, as a senior citizen’s transit operator, and as a Certified Nursing Assistant at the Arcadia Nursing Home. She was a dedicated and conscientious bus driver for the Accomack County Public Schools for many years until her retirement.
At a very young age, Josephine was baptized at the First Baptist Church of Mappsville, Virginia, under the leadership of the late Rev. M. T. Boone. After her marriage, she joined her husband’s church, Metompkin Baptist Church of Parksley, Virginia, under the leadership of the late Rev. Leroy Mapp. One of her fondest memories was being a member of the Leroy Mapp Singers.
Josephine loved working in her yard and took pride in maintaining her many plants and flowers. She was also an avid lover of animals; she would never allow a stray cat to go hungry. She and her daughter shared the love of Duggie, Dutch, Lady, Sophie, and Sky, and it is certain that they will miss one another dearly.
During her illness, Josephine was blessed to have a loving and caring village to support her through the years to include: her dedicated sister-in-law, Miranda Broadwater; her favorite nephew, Hilton Williams; special niece, Veronica Sutherland; Leslie Parker, Alonzo Parker, Loletta Davis, Thomas Corbin, Eunice Warrington, Veronica Shrieves, Charles Copes, Regina Copes, Bertha Lee Wilson, Louvenia Justice, Patti Godfrey (Matthews Market); very special nurse, Tammy Truitt; Hermaine Matthews, Allena Annis Alfree, the Mappsville Post Office, Michael Preston, Leonel Martinez (who maintained her lawn for many years at no charge), her daughter’s co-workers and employment leadership team of District 1199C Training and Upgrading Fund, Philadelphia, PA, and last but not least Chico, her faithful four- legged companion, who stayed by her side throughout.
Josephine was preceded in death by her parents; loving husband, Lynwood T. Byrd; brother, William F. Williams “Buck;” sister, Helena Williams; special cousin, Betty Parker; and her faithful companions, Princess and Missy.
Josephine leaves to cherish her loving memories: a loving daughter, Teressa Byrd; step-son, Antonio Tunell; two step-grandchildren; godchildren, Alonzo Parker, Leslie Parker, Loletta Davis, and Charles Copes; a very special sister-in-law, Miranda Broadwater; a cherished nephew, Hilton Williams “Junie;” caring cousins, Thomas Corbin, Levi Joynes, Belinda Branch, and Carla Branch; three sisters, Helen Williams, Charlette Williams, and Nancy (Vincent) Davis; one brother-in-law, Vincent Davis; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
