Obituary for Lilton "Lilt/Smoovy" Upshur

Lilton Upshur, affectionately known as “Lilt” or “Smoovy,” was born on August 20, 1940 to the late James Bailey and Cora Upshur. Lilt transitioned from his earthly home to his heavenly home on Wednesday, January 12, 2022 at Riverside Regional Medical Center in Newport News, Virginia.

Lilt adored his family. He was a protective and loving husband, father, grandfather, brother, and uncle. There wasn’t a time he didn’t remind his family of how much he loved them or how proud he was of them.

After receiving his education in the public schools of Northampton County, he began his lifelong profession as a truck driver. “Smoovy” had the pleasure of driving for over forty years until his health failed.

In addition to his parents, Lilt was preceded in death by his daughter, Gloria Johnson; four brothers, John, Charles, Henry, and Richard; and three sisters, Ellen, Florence, and Lucinda.

Lilt left this life, but his spirit and legacy live on and will be cherished by his wife, Kwi Upshur; children, Dorinda, Lizzie (Terrence), Latasha, Lamaine, Wanda, Shanell (Patrick), and Yuh-Mey; eighteen grandchildren; twenty-four great-grandchildren; two sisters, Mary and Louise; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives, and friends.

Sorrowfully submitted,
The Family
