Obituary for Lizzie Mae Corbin (Allen)

Lizzie Mae Allen Corbin, daughter of the late William “Pete” Edward Allen and Florence Alice Strand, was born on June 23, 1933, in Accomack County, Virginia. The Lord looked at her struggling and called her home to rest on Friday, April 22, 2022, late afternoon at Layhill Nursing and Rehab Center in Silver Springs, Maryland. Lizzie Mae, known fondly as “Mae,” received her education in the Accomack County School system and graduated from Mary N. Smith High School, class of 1951. Lizzie married in her early twenties and made Washington, DC her home.

Macy’s (Hecht Company and Safeway Stores) employed her. She retired from Safeway after over 30 years. While being employed with Safeway, she traveled to multiple conventions and conferences maintaining awareness of available opportunities for herself and others. Lizzie held the position of Shop Stewart for multiple years.

Lizzie was continually active in her church, Turner Memorial A. M. E. Church in Washington, DC, now located in Hyattsville, Maryland. She often said of her various roles at Turner, being an usher was her passion. She traveled throughout the USA as a representative for conferences as a member of the AME church. All these activities she enjoyed while traveling and shopping in the different states she visited.

In addition to her parents, Mae was preceded in death by her sister, Frances Allen Hinmon and Otha Nock, who was reared by her parents.

She is survived by her nieces, Wanda H. Bailey, Frances N. Hyatt and Vanessa Falzarano-Waters; daughters of Otha Nock; Turner Memorial AME Church family; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.

Lovingly submitted,
The Family
