Obituary for Lydia Denise "Waters" Tunnell

Lydia Denise Waters Tunnell, beloved daughter of the late Rev. Welton L. Waters and Hattie B. Waters, was born in Salisbury, Maryland on December 26, 1956. She departed this life on Sunday, March 19, 2023 in New Church, Virginia.

She received her education in Accomack County Public Schools and graduated from Atlantic High School in 1976. She was reared in a spiritual environment and was a member of Tabernacle Baptist Church in Horntown, Virginia as a child. Later, she would become a member of Mount Nebo Baptist Church in Onancock, Virginia, where her father was the pastor. In 2012, she joined Macedonia Baptist Church in Bloxom, Virginia, where she remained an active member until her health began to fail.

Lydia had an affinity for sewing, knitting, and cooking. She loved making quilts and clothes for those she loved. More than anything, she loved being around family. She was always there for anyone that may have needed a shoulder to lean on or an ear to listen. She was loved abundantly by family and friends and will be greatly missed.

She was preceded in death by her mother, Hattie; her father, Welton; two brothers, Robert and George; and nephew, Keenen.

She was a devoted mother, GiGi, sister, aunt, and friend. She leaves to cherish her memory her daughter, Zenna and son-in-law, Nathaniel; three grandchildren, Ryan, Kaziyah, and her “Bubba Bear” Micah; a niece who was more like a daughter and her children, Cassandra, Aniyah, Jalen, Naeem, and Tylah; six bonus grandchildren, Jaquari, JaiMir, Josh, Jordan, Payton, and Nevaeh; four brothers, Welton, Greg, Kevin, and Johnnie; two sisters, Carolyn and Karen; four sisters-in-law, Patricia, Devinnity, Candice, and Evelyn; a host of special nieces and nephews, too many to name all, but she did want to specifically mention, Cherie, Elisha, Tara, E’Tiyah, Janai, Robert, and Rondell; and many other relatives and friends.

Lovingly submitted,
The Family
