Obituary for Magadlene Garris Hinmon
On June 1, 1935, the world was blessed with Magadlene Garris. She was the daughter of the late George Garris, Sr. and Eula Toppin- Garris, born in Onancock, Virginia.
“Maggie,” as she was affectionately known, was educated in the Accomack County Public Schools. Upon graduating, she went to Kittrell College in North Carolina, where she majored in Education and Cosmetology. “Maggie” loved children and always taught them the “Dee-dee-dee dance.”
“Maggie” accepted the Lord as her personal savior in 1947 at a tent revival. She always said, she knew holiness was right. As a child, she attended Macedonia African Methodist Episcopal Church in Accomac, Virginia. Where she later became a Sunday School Superintendent, served as an Usher, as well as a Trustee. After being led by the Holy Spirit, “Maggie” later joined Miracle Temple of Faith in Mappsville, Virginia. There she was active on many church auxiliaries: Usher, choir member, New Member’s Orientation Instructor, Hospitality chairperson, and Church Mothers Ministry.
On June 1, 1957, “Maggie” married the love of her life, Beauford Hinmon. From that union two children were born, Roderick and Montrose. Madgeline and Beauford shared fifty-one years together before his transition in 2010. With her children all grown up, “Mama Crybaby,” as she was also affectionately known by her immediate family, continued to play the motherly role by helping to raise her granddaughters, Kandace and Whitney.
“Maggie” had a nurturing, loving, and fun personality. You could never leave without a smile on your face. She loved food, her family, and friends, but most of all the Lord. “Aunt Mag” remained very close to her nieces and nephews, whom she had a close, but different bond with each.
Her lifelong and closest friends include: Sophia Garris, Alice Laws, Mamie Gumby, Mother Barbara Marshall, and Marguerite Parks.
“Maggie” was preceded in death by her sisters, Rentha Davis, Dorothy Sample, and Christine Garris; and brothers, George Garris, Jr., Robert Garris, Sr., and William Garris.
Left to treasure her many memories are: her son, Roderick Hinmon; daughter, Montrose Hinmon-Jackson (Dexter); granddaughters, Kandace (Corey) Smith, Whitney (Emmanuel) Hinmon, both of whom she nurtured and helped rear, Lauren Hinmon, Susan Seawright, and Tierra Milbourne; grandson, John Julian Hinmon; great-grandchildren, Ki’Jhae Bull, Kevin Bull, SaMaria Guel, JazLeyn Guel, JahSiah Guel, and King Seawright; great-aunt, Ethel Fletcher-Waters; brothers-in-law, Leander, Wayne, Keith, and Brantley; sisters-in-law, Clayshia Rainey, Sophia Garris, and Marie Garris; special niece, whom she had a sisterly bond with, Diane Garris-Catoe; her loving dog, Daisy; and a host of other relatives and dear friends.
