Obituary for Margaret Francis "Mama" Reid

Margaret Francis Reid, daughter of the late John Henry Reid and Ruth Virginia Savage Reid, was born on June 28, 1947 in Accomack County, Virginia. She was called from labor to reward on Tuesday, May 17, 2022 at Riverside Shore Memorial Hospital in Onancock, Virginia.

Margaret received her education in the Accomack County Public Schools. She was employed by Holly Farms, now Tyson Foods, for thirty-seven years. After her retirement, she mastered the roll of a stay at home grandmother. “Mop Mop,” “Miss Margaret,”and “MaMa,” as she was affectionately known by family and friends, was a woman of many words and full of stories. She loved being surrounded by family, just talking and making us laugh. Margaret enjoyed having her grandchildren and great-grandchildren around her. She would often fuss about being left at home with them, but if they weren’t with her she wanted to know where they were and who they were with.

Margaret could be found at every family function, even if it was for a short period of time. She could always be found in the kitchen sitting in her recliner watching the news, the Game Show Network, or playing on her tablet. She was famous for her singing. People would call from churches all over to hear her sing I’ll Make it Somehow. She’d often sit in the kitchen and just sing. Her presence will forever be missed.

In addition to her parents, Margaret was preceded in death by her life-long companion, William West; son, Roy Lee Bowens; brothers, John Lee, Ralph, Clifton, Isaiah, Milton, Richard, and George; sisters, Hattie and Geraldine; grandson, Raffie; and nephews, George and Milton, Jr.

She leaves to cherish her memory: daughters, JoAnn Bowens, Vanessa Bowens, and Yolanda “YoYo” Turner; special niece whom she raised as a daughter, Doretha Gaines; special son, Bryant Harmon; five grandchildren, Tinesha, Antoine, both of whom she helped to raise, Kathleen, Paulette, and Aaron; eleven great-grandchildren, Dashyne, Jesiah, Qualik, Brooklyn, Talynn, Tristian, Kamryn, Kemori, Kassidy, Noah, and Korae; sister, Susie Mae Taylor (Robert); brothers, William Reid and Eugene Savage; special sister-in-law, Ella Savage; brother-in-law, Wesley Phillips; two special sisters, Doris Knox and Minnie White; special brother, Levin James; two special nieces, Catina Handy and Tashie Smith; and a host of nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews, cousins, other relatives, and friends.

Lovingly and sorrowfully submitted,
The Family
