Obituary

Mary Dean Handy, daughter of the late Lynwood Washington and Marie Goodwine Davis, was born on January 21, 1956 in Nassawadox, Virginia. She entered into eternal rest on June 3, 2021 at Sentara Leigh Hospital in Norfolk, Virginia.

Mary was educated in the public schools of Accomack County. She worked in various industries over the years. Her last endeavor was with Wharton Cleaning Service at Wallops Island, Virginia until her health began to fail.

Mary was a loving and faithful member of St. John’s United Methodist Church in Atlantic, Virginia for many years.

Mary loved to cook and was best known for her delectable cakes. She had a heart of gold and was willing to help anyone in need; the word no was not in her vocabulary. Mary loved to thrift shop with her daughter, Kathy. She also loved to collect porcelain dolls and knit clothes for the dolls.

In addition to her parents, Mary was preceded in death by her siblings, Frank Davis, Charles Goodwine, Darrow Davis, Jennie L. Ridley, and Ronnie Washington.

She leaves to cherish her memory: five daughters, Kathy Davis of New Church, VA, Elizabeth (Prentice) Strand of Temperanceville, VA, Towyna Davis of Bristol,VA, Makesha Payton of Salisbury, MD, and Cassie (Alphonso) Shockley of New Church, VA; adopted children she loved and raised as her own, Lashay White, Vernicia Davis, and Lanoun Payton; seven grandchildren, Travis Davis, Tyris Davis, Jelisa Payton, Kevine Payton, Netrail Strand, Leander Shockley, and Kyle Shockley; four great-grandchildren, Jaydan Davis, Aaliyah Davis, Aspen Talabert, and Karter Payton; sisters, Jewell (Michael) Burgess and Diane Washington; brothers, Tonie Washington, Devon Washington, and Pastor Calvin (Lisa) Washington; sister-in-law, Sylvestalette “Dee” Farrare Davis; special friend, Debbie Woolford; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives, and friends.
