Obituary for Mitchell Jerome Jones

Mitchell Jerome Jones, beloved son of the late George Jones and Elizabeth Bailey Shrieves, was born on February 4, 1945 and reared in Bloxom, Virginia by his mother and devoted stepfather, the late Benjamin Shrieves. He departed this life on October 30, 2020 at The Gardens at Warwick Forest Rehab Center in Newport News, Virginia.

Mitchell, affectionately known as “Jerome” or “Jerry,” was educated in the public schools of Accomack County. Realizing the importance of education, he later obtained his GED. Jerome enrolled in college in New York, completing his studies in Public Investigation. While in New York, he became an entrepreneur and worked independently on several jobs. Upon returning to the Eastern Shore, he gained employment at Perdue Farms and Tyson Foods. After his retirement, he decided to join the workforce again and became a greeter at Walmart. He truly enjoyed this job and worked faithfully until his health began to fail.

“Jerome” accepted Christ as his savior at an early age at First Baptist Church in Mappsville, Virginia, where he worshipped with his family in his youth. Later in life, he attended Macedonia Baptist Church in Bloxom, Virginia, there he sang on the Male Choir for a brief time.

“Jerome” was a very dapper dresser and he instilled this same pride in his children. He was always a pleasure to be with and will be remembered fondly for his favorite saying, “And everything.” Jerome loved his Dallas Cowboys and would defend them to the end. In his leisure, he enjoyed racing, fishing, and traveling. He had no problem with jumping in his car and hitting the road, whether it was to check on family or with his club, Rated X MC. “Jerome” loved his family and his club brothers.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by wife, Vermell Jones; stepfather, Benjamin Shrieves; brother, Melvin Shrieves; and sisters, Carolyn Jones and Evelyn Rew.

He leaves to cherish his fond memories his children, Jerome Jones, Jr., Cleophas Hammond, Sharlene Hammond, Shirelle Hammond, Ella Jordan, Sylvia Jones, Carolyn Thomas, Stacy Jones, and Steven Jones; grandchildren, Kareen Jones, Aizess Imani Jones, Donte Jerome Jones, Jerome Devon Jones, Jahnae Jolene Jones, Javion Jerome Jones, Josaiah Jerome Jones, Jahnaiah Neveah Jones, Jadan Adrian Jones, Nathan Camilo Jones, Johnathan Solis, Deziah Velez, and Daisha Velez; siblings, Sally (Linton) Epps, Pauline (Lamonte) Williams, Cleophas (Charlene) Shrieves, and Shelia (Alton) Conner; special friends, Gloria Fletcher, Samuel Dennis, and Eddie Savage; and a host of other relatives and friends.
