Obituary for Reverend Barry George Mears

Barry George Mears was born on April 18, 1954 (Easter Sunday) to the late Ralph Mears, Sr. and Annie Mears in Northampton County, Virginia. He went home to be with our Lord on Saturday, March 19, 2022, after a lengthy illness, at the Chesapeake Regional Medical Center in Chesapeake, Virginia.

On December 2, 2000, Barry was joined in holy matrimony to the late Elaine Bibbins Mears. They enjoyed over twenty years of marriage until her recent death.

Barry was raised in the church and later gave his life to Jesus. He was ordained as a minister in 2006 and continued his service to the Lord as Associate Pastor of St. Luke African Methodist Episcopal Church in Daugherty, Virginia, under the current leadership of Rev. Herbert Gibbs.

Barry was educated in the public schools of Accomack County. He was a 1972 graduate of Central High School. Barry held many jobs during his lifetime. One of them that held a special memory for him was working the harness race circuit with his father, Ralph, Sr. His love of the sport did not diminish when he moved on to other endeavors. He enjoyed watching the horse races on TV and would gladly share his opinion of which horse to watch and which racetrack was the best. He also enjoyed watching old western TV shows.

In addition to his wife Elaine, Barry was preceded in death by his parents, Ralph, Sr. and Annie Mears; daughter, Marquette Wescott; and sister, Lorrie Sharpe.

He leaves to cherish his memory: son, Anthony Stevens; stepsons, Larry Bibbins and Kendall Bibbins; brother, Ralph Mears, Jr. (Gwen); sisters, Patsy Dicks (Richard) and Annette Boone (Earl Sr.); sisters-in-law, Joyce Bibbins and Barbara White; brothers-in-law, James Bibbins (April) and Jackie Williams (Arlene); special cousin, James Davis; good friend, Robert Smith; church mother, Sis. Thelma Greenleaf; along with a host of family to include grandchildren, aunts, nieces, nephews, and cousins.

Lovingly submitted,
The Family
