Rudolph Jefferson Spratley, son of the late Charles B. Spratley and Etta Purnell Spratley, was born on September 2, 1935 in Eastville, Virginia. He was called from labor to reward on December 7, 2021 at Riverside Healthy Living Community in Smithfield, Virginia.
Rudy, as he was affectionately known, was educated in the public schools of Accomack County. He joined the workforce following high school. He was a USDA Inspector for several years until his retirement.
At an early age, Rudy accepted Christ and joined Metompkin Baptist Church in Parksley, Virginia. In later years, he became a member of Pinewood Heights Baptist Church in Smithfield, Virginia.
In his leisure, Rudy enjoyed speaking at social events and playing dominoes. His greatest pleasure came from spending time with his grandchildren.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brother, Charles B. Spratley, Jr. and his sister, Louise S. Lindsey.
Rudy leaves to cherish his loving memory: daughter, Valda Matthews (Henry) of Smithfield, VA; brother, James Spratley (Gloria) of Petersburg, VA; five grandchildren, Monica Dickerson (Aaron) of Parklsey, VA, Veronica Edwards (Thomas) of Long Island, NY, Shonica Coleman (John) of Smithfield, VA, Donald Matthews, Jr. (Edwyene), and Eric Matthews, both of Long Island, NY; eighteen great-grandchildren, Aaronte, Armonte, Dabrien, De’Shuan, JaQuan, Stephon, Minyara, Christian, Christopher, Dynejah, D’Treontez, Elijah, Shioban, Marissa, Briella, Carmello, Jaquaille, and Jaysiah; one great, great-grandchild, Noah Dickerson; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives, and friends.
Sorrowfully submitted,
