“A good name is more desirable than great riches, to be esteemed is better than silver and gold.
~Proverbs 22:1
On May 6, 1933, Samuel Luther Fletcher, Sr. was born to the late Luther E. and Ella V. Fletcher in Miona, Virginia. Samuel was affectionately known by family and friends as “Daddy,” “Granddaddy,” “Sam,” “Uncle Sam,” “Mr. Sam,” and “Pop” by his sons, Sam, Jr. and Neal.
On Friday, February 18, 2022, Daddy peacefully transitioned from his earthly realm to his heavenly home at his daughter, Sandra’s home in Oak Hall, Virginia, with his family surrounding him.
Daddy attended the Accomack County Public Schools in Withams, Virginia. He was employed at Campbell Soup Incorporation in Pocomoke City, Maryland as a head cook.
Daddy was a devoted Christian, who loved the Lord. He attended Mt. Zion Independent Methodist Church until his health began to decline. He served as a Trustee and he loved quartet music. Some of his favorite singers were Jay Caldwell and the Gospel Ambassadors, Hallelujah Gospel Singers, Willie Neal Johnson and the Gospel Keynotes, and Kenny Davis and the The Melody Aires, to name a few. On Sunday mornings, he loved to listen to the University of Maryland Eastern Shore gospel radio station.
One of Daddy’s favorite pastimes was watching his favorite baseball team the Los Angeles Dodgers. Prior to the COVID pandemic, he would visit the local nursing homes. He was a true conversationalist; he could talk to anyone about any subject to include cars, sports, politics, and life in general. Daddy would be unavailable between 10 AM and 2 PM daily; this was his time to watch TV without interruptions.
In addition to his parents, Daddy was preceded in death by his wife of forty-seven years, Mabel Hall Fletcher; daughter, Vernia “Vee” Fletcher; brother, Kermit Fletcher; and a cousin who was like a brother, Chester Fletcher.
Daddy leaves to cherish his fond memories: his seven children, Samuel (Joan) Fletcher, Jr. of Greensboro, NC, Shirley (RiChard) VaRence of Pocomoke City, MD, Patricia (Michael, Sr.) Press of Mappsville, VA, Cornelius (Tonya) Fletcher of Prince George, VA, Ivory Fletcher of Crestview, FL, Sandra Fletcher of Oak Hall, VA, and Pamela Townsend of Mappsville, VA; one sister, Josephine Douglas of Withams, VA; thirteen grandchildren, one granddaughter whom he raised as his own, LaToya Press of Atlantic, VA; thirteen great-grandchildren, one special great-granddaughter, Alexis Press of Withams, VA; two great, great-grandsons; a special niece, Aniece Harmon of New Church, VA; two brothers-in-law, Frederick Hall of Oak Hall, VA and Donald Hall of Tacoma, WA; one sister-in-law, Christine Smith of Brooklyn, NY; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives, and friends.
Lovingly submitted,
The Family
