Obituary for Spencer Lee Savage
Spencer Lee Savage began his journey on February 6, 1936 in Accomack County, Virginia. Born to parents John Edward Savage Sr. and Mary Lee Savage (Boggs). In 1953 after graduating high school, he left the place of his birth to come to Baltimore, Maryland, where some of his siblings had already come.
His first job in Baltimore was at the Oriole Cafeteria. He then moved on to Donneybrook Pharmacy delivering prescriptions and then on to Marsden Chevrolet. Then came Bob Davidson Ford in 1964, where he worked as the New Car get ready Manager until his illness and subsequent death. The “Davidson” family … they loved Spencer and treated him royally.
Spencer was baptized at Shiloh Baptist Church in Painter, Virginia. Later, he joined New Union Baptist Church in Baltimore pastored by Reverend Dr. Charles E. Savage, his brother. While at New Union Baptist Church, Spencer served on the Mass choir and the Male chorus also serving as vice-president for both.
Spencer was a complicated and passionate man. Passionate for the things and the people he loved.
Spencer was a lover of good music. Some of his favorites were The Platters, the Morgan State University Choir under the direction of the late Dr. Nathan Carter, Roy Hamilton, and Mahalia Jackson.
Most of all he loved his birthplace on the Eastern Shore of Virginia and the family home there, which his grandsons fondly called “the farm.” He loved being surrounded by family and friends, telling old stories over and over, eating good food, i.e., turnip greens, (seven tops), chicken and dumplings, and steaming good crabs. He was the crab afficionado. You could ask him anything about crabs and he would know the answer. These became known as crab lessons. His crabs, to use his words were so “sweet…”. They will be missed!
He always brought the best crabs, and he always brought the best clothes. Yes, Nordstrom’s, Macy’s, Florsheim Shoes, Hamburg’s, Saks, Lord and Taylor, Gage’s Menswear, and Joseph A. Bank. They all knew him well.
We loved him so!

Preceding Spencer in death is his son, Claude; father, John E. Savage Sr.; mother, Mary L. Savage; brothers, John, David, James, and George; sisters, Josephine, Mary, and Ethel; nephew, Nicholas; and nieces, Constance and Sylvia.
Left to treasure his memory: Eva Bunting, his constant companion; daughters, Angela Austin (Michael) and Kelly Mack; granddaughter, Yourvonne Savage; grandsons, Nicholas Austin (Moneeka) and Michael Austin Jr.; great grandsons, Shemar Taylor and Alex Austin; nephews, Donald Savage (Clementine), LeRoy Williams (Judy), John E. Savage, III, and Bernard Savage (Velma); nieces, Yvonne Davis, Maxine Harrison-Turner (Richard), Nadine V. Savage, Diane Savage, and Joan Carr (Felix); and a host of great and, great-great nieces and nephews.
