Vaughn Waldo Topping, Sr. departed this life on January 17, 2022 at Riverside Shore Memorial Hospital in Onancock, Virginia. He was born on May 14, 1934 to the late Carrol and Maggie Topping.
“Smitty,” as he was affectionately known, was educated in the public schools of Accomack County. He entered the workforce at an early age and began a lifelong career in trucking. Vaughn was a truck driver for many farms on the Eastern Shore.
Vaughn accepted the Lord at an early age, while attending Metropolitan United Methodist Church with his family.
In June 1960, Vaughn married Nancy Lee Watson Topping. Their union was blessed with sixty years of marriage until Nancy’s passing in July 2020. After her passing, Vaughn was left with a void and broken heart. He felt as if he couldn’t live without her and now they have been reunited.
In his spare time, Vaughn enjoyed riding around Bayside, hanging out and talking on the phone with family and friends, and watching TV.
In addition to his parents and wife, Vaughn was preceded in death by one sister, Joyce Yvonne Davis; and his grandparents, Oscar and Dora Savage.
He leaves to cherish his loving memories: five children, Yvonne (David Lee) Baines, Mervin (Joanne) Hinmon, Debbie Topping, Vaughn Topping, Jr., and Oscar “Pop” Topping; one grandson whom he raised as his own, TreVaughn Topping; one sister, Peggy Corbin; five stepchildren, Deborah (Sylvester), Keith, Calvin (Joan), Thelma, and Rhonda (Art); nine grandchildren; thirteen great-grandchildren, he loved them all but always checked on two of them, Ky’Shaun and Mollie; two great, great-grandchildren; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives, and friends.
