Obituary

Edward “Balley” Louis Savage was born on February 8, 1936 to the late Sewell and Janie Savage. He was educated in the public schools of Accomack County School system and graduated from Mary N. Smith High School in 1954.

Following high school, Eddie relocated to East Orange, New Jersey and resided with the late Mrs. Smith, whom he considered as a second mother. He worked various job until 1964 when he began working for the State of New Jersey Division of Motor Vehicles until retirement in 1991.

In 1970, Eddie was introduced to the love of his life, Bernice Grady, by his late sister, Mary “Sis.” Although there were no children from this union, they raised three children together, Norman, Angela “Gee Gee,” and Natalie. They would go on spend to forty-five years together until Bernice’s passing in 2015.

Eddie and Bernice had multiple family and friends that they spent time with over the years. Whether it was fond memories of party’s at “Sis” and Al’s or hanging out with Danny and Thelma, they truly enjoyed life. Eddie had so many friends it would takes books to list them all. The baby brother, he was close to all of his sibling who preceded him in death. He sent annual baseball publication to Jimmy, never missing a year. Playing cards with Fred or joking with Harold and Sewell, he loved and missed them all. He was particularly close to his sister Mary “Sis,” who spoiled him terribly.

Anyone can be a father, but it takes someone special to be a dad. Always there and caring no matter what. He was “Grand Pa” to older kids and “Pop Pop” to the little ones. All the kids loved their 21st birthday rite of passage, to have a drink with “Grand Pa.”

Eddie “Balley” adored his nieces and nephews. He made every effort to call and stay current with what is happening in their lives. Whether Uncle Eddie was teasing them or they him, he loved every minute of it.

Edward is survived by: a son, Norman Grady; daughters, Angela (Laura) Robinson and Natalie (Tonja) Alexander; grandchildren, Meosha (Kirk), Carl, Richarde, Reje, Shante, and Lyana; nine great-grandchildren; daughters-in-law, Barbara and Martha; nephews, Mark, Glen, Michael, and Alphonso; nieces, Betty, Stephanie, Cherry, Avis, Lincebell , Marietta, and Carolyn; and a host of family and friends.

He was preceded in death by brothers, James, Harold, Fred, and Sewell; sister, Mary; brother-in-law, Alphonso; sisters-in-law, Rozelma, Frances, Alice, and Lois; nephews, William, Quentin, and Craig; and niece, Carla.
